Water Installation Update -- Sent to Girdwood Chapel Members

WATER INSTALLATION

Sunday was an emotional day for us (or at least for your pastor) as it seemed as if the installation of water was going to have to wait until next year due to several different reasons. However, after some conversations and some assessment, I can say that Steve Halverson (building chairperson), Ed Gillen (contractor), and I are optimistic that we can make this happen this year. There are, of course, a lot more details, but I wanted to tell you that this is the case and ask for your continued prayers for the process.

Installation of Sewer 25 July 2009 / Problems

INSTALLATION

We were supposed to be gettiing sewer and water in.  However, with AWWU (Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility) telling us we couldn't use the existing water stub-out, we weren't able to get water in at this time.  It will have to come later.  However, the sewer (including manhole) got in.  We fought ground water under the street.  Later on we had some difficulty with the manhole fittings, but Ed was able to work it out. See all the pictures HERE.

PROBLEMS

This process tested the limits of what our contractor could do with a team of three persons and the equipment he was able to gather.  At the end of the day he lamented that, with the new parameters AWWU has placed on us (larger hole, more groundwater, bigger equipment) he knows that he can't put in the water the same way that he put in the sewer.  We were going to need to put the job up for bid to a full company to do the job.  This is not a problem with our contractor.  He has been awesome and has donated his time to us.  We give him nothing but thanks and have told him that we are grateful.  Our contractor said that, perhaps, he could get it done "next year."  (It's these last words that too the wind out of this pastor's sails)

What this means for us:

  • We need a lot of gravel to cover up the peat we pulled up with the sewer installation.
  • We need to be in dialogue with AWWU to see if there is any other way to get water besides putting in a new "tap".
  • We need to be looking at our options for contractors and what this means for our finances.
  • We'll continue doing all we can and praying all we can to get into the building in the fall of this year.  This recent development, however, makes that much harder.

We'll be updating with more as it comes up.  Pray for us.
